Prescription Drugs Misuse, Abuse, Overdose & Diversion Video

Prescription Drugs: Killing More Than Pain; Sponsor: Multijurisdictional Counterdrug Task Force Training (MCTFT)/CADCA; Program Description: When America entered the new millennium, it entered a new era in the world of drug abuse. From the streets of the cities to the secluded family homes in the suburbs, prescription drug abuse is a problem that’s spilling out of pill bottles and into the lives of millions all across our country. Back in 2000, about 1.5 million Americans abused prescription drugs. Two years later, that number quadrupled — to more than six million. That’s a 400% increase. Thousands of people die each year because they overdose on prescription medications. Many abusers think they’re an FDA-approved high, while others become addicted after using powerful painkillers to treat legitimate pain. During this broadcast, learn how abusers are getting their drugs and how law enforcement, doctors, and pharmacists are fighting the problem. Hear from recovering addicts, treatment providers, doctors, robbery victims and more. Prescription drugs kill much more than pain. Program Objectives: Learn what prescription drugs are abused. Learn how doctors can better treat pain. See what would help pharmacists spot forged and altered prescriptions
See what tactics work for law enforcement
Find out what drug companies are doing
Know where to go for help. Prescription drugs, a category of psychotherapeutics that comprises prescription-type pain relievers, tranquilizers, stimulants, and sedatives, are among the substances most commonly abused by young people in the United States. Prescription drugs are readily available and can easily be obtained by teenagers who abuse these drugs to experience a variety of desired effects. Often these young people are unaware of the serious health risks involved in abusing prescription drugs. Increasingly younger adolescents obtain prescription drugs from classmates, friends, and family members, or they steal the drugs from school medicine dispensaries and from people for whom the drug had been legitimately prescribed. Keywords: narcotics. Prescription drugs, which are widely available and easy to obtain, provide young people with an easily accessible, inexpensive means of altering their mental and physical state. Abusers may experience a heightened sense of pleasure, euphoria, drowsiness, increased energy, or various other effects depending upon the drugs they abuse. Young people who abuse prescription drugs put themselves at risk of experiencing dangerous side effects. Prescription drugs–when taken as prescribed by a physician–successfully treat a variety of mental or physical conditions. However, when abused, these drugs can alter the brain’s activity and lead to debilitating or life-threatening health problems and result in physical or psychological dependence. Public domain video.

    Just more made up …
Just more made up propaganda from the cowards and sociopaths of the DEA. Instead of going after real criminals they go after doctors and peaceful pot smokers and growers. This is another made up ‘crisis.’ Because of propaganda like this legitimate patients suffer every day. the DEA!

    America’s drug …
America’s drug policy is evil! So is the DEA! Keep your laws off of my body! The war on drugs is not working… you are just giving the illegal drug cartels more money, power and reasons to commit violence! Legalize it and pull your heads out of your (those who think the government should keep marijuana illegal)! and TheFragile89, saying people should not be prescribed drugs ever? How stupid can you be moron! Read what you wrote and think again! Legalize drugs and save money and lives!

    Hey, sorry about …
Hey, sorry about all the stupid kids out there, BUT there is no excuse for the GOVERNMENT to be making any kind, let alone prescription drugs ILLEGAL only for certain people…pain patients WHO NEED IT. The doctors seem to have NO PROBLEM giving out scripts to druggys as long as noone has divulged a persons ANONYMITY or they believe you have a problem. My bible says that it is not what goes into a man that is unclean, but what proceedeth out of the man. Like evil judgements on users or SH*T.

  14. TheFragile89 Says:

    People should not …
People should not be prescribed drugs ever. Unless they have a serious condition. It’s pretty sick that doctors hold back on telling patients everything they should know about them, so the patients aren’t scared off and the doctors can feel like they are doing their job. Depression, anxiety, and other factors can be overcome without the use of drugs.

    I am a pain patient …
I am a pain patient. Suffered for 30 years because my doctors say they are afraid of the DEA and the states medical boards. Treating pain patients like criminals because 1% to 3% of our population chosses to abuse leagl and illegal drugs is criminal but that’s the result of this failed war on drugs! What’s next, put cigerette smokers and alcohol drinkers in prison too? How about a war on poverty and leave the drug problem to medical professionals who are trained to deal with addiction!
    In Pain.

    Amen! I have been …
Amen! I have been under treated for pain for years and suffer daily. Patients are not believed and labeled as drug seekers. I worked in a ER and my job was to flag anybody who received narcotics. They were all labeled. Some of these people were dying of AIDS, Cancer, and other diseases like broken bones, burns. They were labeled.

  22. Mrplex63 Says:

    Well this is all …
Well this is all well and good, but the bottom line is that the legitimate pain sufferers are not being treated with the medications that they need due to the war on drugs.
In the state of Ky your chances of being properly treated for pain issues are slim to none.
My daughter was given only 12 pain tablets after an appendectomy/endometriosis combo surgery, so you tell me who is suffering from the war on drugs.
I’m all for fighting illegal drugs, but PLEASE forget about those in need of them

    It is true that …
It is true that life can really suck sometimes, but popping a pill is not the answer. The quick fix mentality is a lie and you may suffer side effects and addiction. Your life will go from bad to worse.
