What is your opinion or experience on the use of narcotics such as Demerol as a labor pain medication?

I would like to have a natural birth but I still want to have the option of a medication if I want it and I really hate the idea of an epidural because I do not want something in my back, no matter what. My doctor somewhat talked to me about things like Demerol as an alternative, what is your opinion or your experience with using this?

i went with the epidural because demerol drugs you and the baby…. i didnt want my baby to be drugged up so i got the epi…. i also went to see my bestie while she was in the hospital she was soooooo high looking i thanked God i didnt go that route…but thats just my opinion…

and getting the needle put in for the epi was pretty much painless compared to the contractions..

I would much rather use an epidural than a narcotic. The narcotic is passed to the baby and it will most likely be born suffering the dose of the narcotic as well. With an epidural, there’s a "chance" it may effect the baby.

Not only that but the feeling of loss of sensation and awareness that demerol gives is just plain unsettling to me. I would rather have a clear head and KNOW that I can’t feel my legs because I have pain meds going to that area than to feel uncontrollably drunk and out of control. I’m just not a fan of narcotics at all though.

My expierence with the demerol was a good one. it doesn’t take the pain away it just helps you relax in between contractions. i was only in labor for like four hours and i didn’t really feel "drugged" and my daughter was not "drugged" when she was born. she immediatly latched on had no problem nursing and never had side effects from it. everything has a risk to the baby. however if it wasn’t found to be safe most of the time, it wouldn’t be used in pregnancy. The biggest side effect of it is it can slow down your labor.

i hated it. it made my labor even more miserable. i was sooo sleepy and groggy i couldn’t really think straight i wish i would have never got that.

Demerol makes me puke, literally, if I stand up I instantly vomit, or move for that matter. It also is a narcotic and will have an affect on the baby. I had an epidural and it really is not that bad, you don’t even feel it in your back. It has very low risks to the baby, and you are completely alert and aware. I enjoyed my labor and delivery. We were laughing and joking while I was pushing. Demerol will make you drowsy

i had the demerol, back in the day they didn’t use the epidural unless it was an emergency (1980′s) after having 3 babies and using demerol with 2 – natural with the third – I would leave your options open to the epidural. some doctors do what is called a "walking epidural" so you aren’t totally numb and can still move around.

    Keep your birth plan flexible.
