How often do people have to register under California law for sex, arson or narcotics convictions?

Do these individuals have to register for life? What is the consequence if they fail to register? Are photos taken each time they register?

Narcotics registration lasts for five years after the expiration of probation or parole. (Health & Safety Code sec. 11594.) Registration is required any time the person moves from one city or county to another, or lives in a particular city or county for 30 days or more.

Arson registration is theoretically for life, but can be ended by certain types of court orders (so-called expungment (which isn’t really expungment) or a certificate of rehabilitation). (Penal Code sec. 457.1.) Registration is required whenever the person changes residence, even within the same city or county.

Sex registration is for life, and in most cases cannot be removed in any manner except a pardon. (Penal Code sec. 290.) Registration is yearly (in some cases more often) and anytime the person changes residence.

Registration requires fingerprints and a photo.

Violation of registration requirements is a crime, which can be a felony or misdemeanor depending upon the offense for which registration was required and whether the person has prior convictions for failing to register.

They have to re-register whenever they move, and yes, their photograph is taken by the police dept. where they move to.

They need to register for the rest of their lives unless a judge states otherwise, and if they fail to register and are caught, they go directly to jail.
