Why do Doctors have to have you do a urine test before they can pescribe you narcotic pain relievers?

I know they need to see if you are on any illegal drugs, but are there any other reasons?

Common sense would suggest that if your system already carried narcotics due to drug abuse, a further dose from your doctor could well kill you. Better to be safe than sorry!

    Make sure your kidneys are working correctly. Everything, food, drugs, is eventually passed out through the bowels, kidney, so if you have a kidney impairment, no way you can be prescribed narcotics as the kidney may not be able to filter out the drug, so the drug builds up in the system.
