Does anyone know how the narcotic demerol is injected and how does it work?

Im pregnant and my doctor has asked me to choose what narcotic im wanting to take, and i have no idea how demerol works. I’ve tried looking it up on all different sites but it don’t understand the explanation. Could someone please explain this to me?
Thank You! =]

I can’t say for certain what your doctor will do but I’d imagine it would be administered through a drip in your IV. :) And just an fyi: those are only administered to a certain dilation, after that…its just plain old natural birth.

Narcotic for what? the pain in labor? just get a c section. Demerol is injected in the thigh usually.

This seems strange. I do not remember a doctor giving a patient, especially a layperson, the choice of narcotics. Your doctor is the one who should explain the choices to you.

In general Demerol, generic name is meperidine, is very potent. It can be injected into fatty (subcutaneous) tissue, muscle, or IV. Subcutaneous is slowest, but lasts longer. IV is faster, but does not last as long.

I have never had it. The biggest complaint that I have heard from patients is that it knocks them out. They fall asleep in pain and wake up in pain. Nausea is common also.

In a solution in an IV drip, there is better control. Still you need to talk to your doctor.

    I am an RN.
