Hysterectomy for endometriosis?

Monday, September 21st, 2009

Two months ago had my right ovary removed due to a 15cm mass. They found that I had advanced endometriosis, but at the time, only removed the one ovary. Now after two months, I am having pain everyday on the right side, and now pain on the left side. I had an ultrasound today, that revealed a thick endometrium, but no cysts or masses on the left side. I started taking Seasonique a couple weeks after the surgery to control the endometriosis, but it doesn’t seem to be working since I am having so much pain. My Dr. seems to think it is either adhesions or more endo. I am thinking endo since I am having pain on the left side, and they did no surgery on the left side. The options I have been given are Lupron (which I will not consider due to the side effects), and hysterectomy. I do not plan to have children, but wondering if these are my only options? I really do not want to take hormones, but I cannot endure the pain any longer, and simply cannot take narcotics everyday. I’m 36.
The Dr. did not do a hysterectomy at the time because I told her I wanted to avoid HRT at all costs (my mom had a terrible time). At the time, the left ovary was ok. The surgery was done because of the mass, the endo was discovered when the mass was removed. I’m baffled why I have more pain now then I did with a 15cm mass, and just two months after surgery. I considered waiting it out to see if it would get better on Seasonique, but the pain is getting worse, not better.

LISTEN TO ME. Please. I am only adamant about this because I’m 39 years old and just had a hysterectomy myself. I, too, have endometriosis. I just had my uterus, one ovary AND even an appendix removed because mine was so bad (but I never wanted kids, so it’s cool).

I can’t give you a medical opinion because each case is so unique. However, get more than one opinion (I had 4 and Aetna covered every one of them), do your research and the thing I was going to tell you is read up on MSM. It’s a supplement. The long name is methylsulfonylmethane. As I was home on disability and doing research, I found amazing things about it. I get it at Whole Foods in NJ, but you can find it at any vitamin or health foods store. You can’t overdose on it as you literally "pee it out" in 12 hours, it’s just a form of sulfur. I began reading up on it as I was vain and didn’t want to have a terrible scar. It was an ingredient in a cleanser that my dermatologist recommended and it cleared my skin so well, I wanted to know more.

What I found is that it aids in pain relief immensely, helps patients heal quicker after surgery, and get this – side effects are healthier hair and nails. I got out the hospital March 25th and until this day, I haven’t so much as taken a Tylenol for pain. NOTHING. I hadn’t even noticed until a few weeks ago (since I was on disability and sitting in front of my pc most of the day) that even my beginning signs of carpal tunnel have completely ceased.

I take 3000 mg a day. MSM was used for people with tennis elbow, knee problems, etc. I have found the pain relief phenomenal. My boyfriend who practices martial arts and is a few years older than me started taking it and says he has noticed an improvement in his performance without pain.

Please, do your research and look into it. I suffered with pain of endometrios right up until the day I closed my eyes on the surgeon’s table and today my hair is ultra healthy, I don’t even bother to wrap my nails anymore (extra cash in my pockets) and after major surgery haven’t even had an aspirin. We’re about the same age. It’s not too late to learn.

I don’t want to bog you down with links, but check out these to start you off. You still need to see a doctor to find out what’s going on inside your body, but you can possibly relieve much of the pain you’re experiencing.

I won’t leave my email address here, but you can go to my profile and if you want to contact me, feel free. I know what you mean about the pain.

Good luck, Sweetie!

Are you glad Proposition 1 passed in Michigan?

Saturday, September 19th, 2009

I voted yes for many reasons to legalize medical marijuana, these are just a few. Do you think it is a good idea or a bad idea? Weigh in with the pros and cons to accentuate your points please.

The U.S.A demonizes an organic plant (marijuana), yet advocates the use of alcohol, synthetic drugs such as vicoden, oxycontin, paxil, and many other mind altering drugs. I just don’t understand the logic in that. It makes no sense. PROHIBITION NEVER WORKS AS WELL AS DE-CRIMINALIZATION. 50% of Americas prisons house NON VIOLENT DRUG USERS!!! Want to help fix the economy? Stop demonizing a stupid plant.

One Mothers account

My darling daughter, Caprice, lost her battle against cancer this July. She graduated from college in December, was diagnosed with T cell lymphoma in March, and four months later her suffering was over.

Three years ago, my 72-year-old mother, Phyllis O’Grady, lost her battle against endometrial cancer.

It is heart-wrenching to watch our loved ones suffer. As caretakers, we yearn to do everything in our power to stop their pain and increase their odds of recovery.

Cancer patients develop an aversion to food. Chemotherapy decreases their appetites, causes nausea, and weakens their immune systems. It is a catch-22. Cancer sufferers need nourishment, yet eating becomes an ordeal.

Marijuana, unlike narcotics and other medications, has minimal side effects and major benefits. It increases appetites, reduces nausea, eases muscle pain, reduces stress, and allows patients to get much-needed rest and relief from their symptoms. It also is non-addictive.

I wish my daughter and my mother would have had legal access to this option. Our loved ones deserve all the comfort and compassion we can provide throughout their very difficult — and very painful — journeys.

I am so happy that the proposal passed. I have been a long time advocate for medical marijuana and hope to see the rest of our country follow suit. There are not enough options out there for cancer sufferers and this natural herb allows the patient the ability to eat and relax, which is a great comfort to the patient and family. Also, the prisons and jails are filled with citizens who use it and I think that is a crime in itself. These are non violent people who have no business being locked up. There are many reasons to decriminalize or legalize it, that it just makes no sense for it to be any other way. So, yeah, I am very happy that Prop 1 passed and can’t come up with one downside to even comment on.

Why has the U.S. continued a "demand-side" war on drugs in light of poor results?

Thursday, September 17th, 2009

The U.S. has been conducting a "demand-side" war on drugs for decades.
Some results:
1) Narcotics traffic into the U.S. has increased during this time.
2) Federal and state tax commitments for the policing and incarceration of non-violent drug offenders have skyrocketed.
3) In some recent instances, e.g. fentanyl-laced heroin, kids choosing to experiment are DYING because they are at the mercy of criminal vendors, i.e. no quality-control of sold chemicals.

If the costs and results of this program were audited within any for-profit corporation, the board of directors would have fired the management years ago. In the least, investors would have screamed to halt the program or cut off its funding in light of the lack of success.

What would be the likely costs and effects of removing the profit-motive for the traffickers by legalizing, taxing, and providing oversight for some of the less harmful street-drugs (turn them into standard commodities subject to free-market economics)?

The ‘war on drugs’ isn’t a rational fight against a social ill. It’s something that plays well on TV, especially to people who don’t know much about it, but are afraid.

Talking tough makes politicians look good and the scared and uneducated feel safe. Whether the policy works or not has little to do with it.

Witness current policy on, well, just about everything.

IV DHE for Migraines and Chronic daily headaches?

Tuesday, September 15th, 2009

Does anyone know about IV DHE? Does it really work? Are thereany severe side effects? This is going to be my last resort for my headaches. I have been on seizure meds., narcotics, triptans, and a list of other meds. for it. EEG,CAT,MRI, Sleep study=all normal. Any suggestions from anyone? Oh yea, I am expecting a couple of smart ellic comments- come on show your "lack" of intelligence.
smells and bright light trigger my headaches. A bananna smell will trigger it.

My 12 year old daughter suffers from extreme chronic migraines. She finally got IV DHE about 8 months ago and she’s been alot better ever since. It was pretty rough on her. DHE causes severe nausea and dizziness, so you will get Fenergan to help with that. The Fenergan won’t help everything, and you might throw up a few times, depending on how you handle that kind of stuff. Keep a
soft pillow, blanket, bottle of water, and a few mints with you at all times. This helps. You may not be able to walk or function for a while, so just go home and sleep it off. I hope this helps you and I really hope that you get better. My daughter is much better so I have alot of praise for this procedure. Good luck.

Can Narcotic Pain Medications Cause Problems With Swallowing?

Sunday, September 13th, 2009

I have been on Vicodin for about 4 months, and last week my doctor changed my prescription to Oxycodone. For the past month or two I have found that swallowing has become difficult. I can swallow, but some of the food tends to get stuck at the back of my throat requiring me to take a drink to get it down.

I never used to have this problem and I am wondering if it could be a side effect of the heavy narcotics?

You have limited saliva which is a side effect of many different drugs.

You need to always have liquid nearby when you eat. You may need to get oral balance moisturizer for your mouth in extreme cases.

It’s not a problem with the muscles swallowing as you describe, it’s that the throat is completely dry and as you chew the saliva doesnt’ mix with the food.

Acupuncture as treatment of chemotherapy induced neuropathy

Sunday, September 13th, 2009

Acupuncture as treatment of chemotherapy induced neuropathy.

hemotherapy can have adverse effects on the nervous system. Some chemotherapy such as vincristine, cisplatin, and paclitaxel have been known to cause symptoms of neuropathy such as numbness, tingling and pain in the extremities, mild weakness, and constipation. Severe nerve damage may cause impaired walking abilities, severe bladder dysfunction, and disabling sensory loss. These side effects may improve or disappear after the discontinuation of chemotherapy, but may take several months to do so.

Several medications can be given to alleviate these symptoms and are listed below. Often times, they are combined with analgesics or narcotic medications to provide maximum pain relief. Response to therapy varies with each individual and their tolerance to possible side effects. Many of these medications are used to treat other health conditions and not all medications may be appropriate for you. Speak to your physician about your treatment options.

Non-medicinal methods can also be used to help manage neuropathy. If your fingers are numb, be very careful when grasping sharp, hot, or otherwise dangerous objects. If your sense of balance or muscle strength is affected, avoid falls by moving carefully, using handrails when going up or down stairs, and using bath mats in the bathtub or shower. And always wear shoes with rubber soles (if possible) to protect your feet.

oxycodone – what neurotransmitter sites are affected by oxycodone?

Friday, September 11th, 2009

I recently took a 5mg oxycodone tablet. After taking it my emotions became enhanced. This was a positive effect for me because normally my emotions are very dull. For example, I havent cried in years. Even when I feel sadness I am unable to physically cry. Another example is anger. I am nearly incapable of expressing anger even when I am mad. I took the oxycodone, and emotion came back. So… why did this happen? Can I reproduce this side effect with a non-narcotic? It is important because it made me feel more human. Thank you. BTW I have PTSD

Yep Percocet is great! If you feel these effects please stop taking it or you will end up like me HOOKED. The Oxy gives your brain something called
EUPHORIA- {state of very intense happiness and feelings of well-being} This takes pace in the part of the brain called the Opiate Receptors. It binds to the spine. It feels so good but its soo bad. This will end up making you not only physically addicted but Chemically Dependable. So then you will not be able to function both ways.
If you read the prescription warnings and side effects it says if you have this euphoria you should call your DR or Pharmacy. Please do! And no you can not reproduce this with Non narcotics anywhere near how Oxy does it.
I know the drug feels right because you feel emotionally bottled right? But this will only make it worse.

why does Xanax help my headaches when nothing else has?

Wednesday, September 9th, 2009

I’ve had chronic daily headache for over a year now and have tried tricyclics, beta blockers, seizure meds, migraine meds (imitrex, axert), and OTCs. No help and/or unbearable side effects. Narcotics provide some relief, but with obvious drawbacks. But if I take .5 mg xanax every night, it relieves my headaches for about 20 hours.
(add: it just seems weird that stress, which I’m not noticing, is causing such daily debilitating pain…is there no other explanation?)

Your headaches are most likely caused by some sort of stress, because Xanax and all other benzos, really help relieving your stress they could be taking away the side effects, as in your case, headaches, also.

Xanax cures everything

Why our government make noise on smoking and drinking, take the next step..?

Monday, September 7th, 2009

We all complain cigarettes smoking and alcohol consumption is bad for health, why can’t the gov’t ban these things as marijana and coccain. It does not make any difference to me allowing + 18 to buy cigarette and + 21 to drink, should’nt it be the other way, the older you grow health deteroriates, not getting healthier. These are not health products. I think it is time to stop educating side effects about these products, which no one listens. Consider tobacco as narcotics and ban for ever. Is there any govt serious of our health or they want to take more bribes and support the growing trend on smoking and alcohol. Most of the older people, suffering from smoking and alcohol abuse replied to me, they wished our government banned these products when they were young. despite it gives more tax to govt and manufacturers richer, thus destroying our health. Stopping these products can have serious effects on the market from unemployment to low stocks etc.. I think health is more important.

there are powerful lobbyists for these products and they will never be banned. stupid people are everywhere
