How do you move on from bad days and situations?

Monday, October 26th, 2009

I had an infection 2 weeks ago. But I am in school so I still had to study for hours every day. I did it, but the pain was terrible. The doctor prescribed a narcotic, Percocet but I just stuck to tylenol. Seriously, I am very prone to addictions. Well the infection has mostly passed but it has left an emotional mark. 1 Week later I was still in recovery but had to push myself to do exhaustive things. Like I had to go to a museum (2 hours away) by trains and buses… I had to walk over 3 miles. Sure I did all these things, but I have no output for my frustration and exhaustion. I don’t have anyone to talk to, and I feel like all of these things pile up inside. It’s like a ball of anger and frustration that doesn’t come out but just gets bigger. What do you think about this? How would you handle being tiresome and exhausted?

Simply put: There are no good days nor bad, it’s how you react to them.

Life is full of little things that are thrown in front of us to "deal" with. You seem to dealing with them and yet left frustrated and tired. I guess you would have to ask yourself why you are so frustrated? Where is the anger coming from?

If you are a student, I feel bad for you. It puts a lot of stress on some students. You need a day off sounds like. School term will end soon, no?

Take a deep breath and just relax.

I need meal ideas for tomorrow.?

Saturday, October 24th, 2009

Hey guys, I’m 17 and I had UP3 surgery yesterday (uvulopalatopharyngoplasty–it’s throat surgery. They took out my adenoids, tonsils, and cut off about a third of my uvula). I have been discharged from the hospital and am at home now. My throat hurts like hell but I am on codeine for it (20 ml every three hours–that’s a ton of drugs, especially considering it’s a narcotic) so I am able to eat some things but not much. Today I was able to eat a very small amount of food–a small portion of a Slimfast shake and a little bit of very soft mashed potatoes. My parents are both working tomorrow (they could not get time off) and there is nobody around who can make anything for me, so I need some meal ideas that a person who had massive throat surgery can eat. The stuff needs to be things that we would have readily available in the pantry, and whatever i make needs to be very very soft and quite bland (any spice or anything even remotely stiff, hard, or crunchy will be disastrous for my recovery). What suggestions do you have?

Chicken noodle soup in a can,
baked potato in the microwave with some butter,
scrambled eggs,
oatmeal,
cream of wheat or malt-o-meal,
ramen noodles,
pudding if you have some you can make it yourself if you have milk, sugar, cornstarch and vanilla.
Mac n cheese,
yogurt ,
chocolate milk,
Popsicles

My 14y/o will miss a lot of school b/c of an injury, any suggestions on how to handle school?

Wednesday, October 14th, 2009

She would have started high school last monday but because of her injury and surgery she didn’t start with her fellow classmates. She tried to go a 1/2 day but it ended up a disaster. She was in so much pain, the school is so large and over crowded she couldn’t get around on crutches, people were bumping into her, not to mention she is on narcotic pain meds and is out of it anyway. I really don’t think it is a good idea that she return to school anytime soon. The problem is the councelors at the school are calling me and telling me she has to be back by monday or she won’t get credit for her classes. Then I get a call from the attendance office saying they need a dr’s note to excuse her from all of her missed days. OK, not a problem, but do they think she put a brace on her leg, bought crutches and dropped out of high school soccer for an ENTIRE YEAR just for the hell of it? Not to mention I have already called the attendance office telling them she wouldn’t be at school the rest of the week. I even requested and picked up all of her work for that week. So why are they calling me and bugging me? It’s not just the calling, they are RUDE about it all, like we’ve done something wrong.

Anyway, if I could I would completely take her out and homeschool her, but since I am divorced and my ex has to agree with what I do here, I am wondering if there is another option…maybe she can just continue to do her work at home until she is well enough to walk the long hallways at her high school and get around comfortably. Who knows, she might be out 2-3 months. She certainly can not return to sports for at least 12 months if at all. The complete recovery takes a full 12 months.

Anyone ever have a child out of school for an extended period of time? How did you handle the school and the school work?

Have you tried explaining the problem to your ex? Surely, he’d be willing to agree to go along with homeschooling under such circumstances?

If not, the school should have some kind of "homebound" program that she can participate in. You’ll probably have to show the documentation from a doctor, but then the school will be obligated to provide a teacher who’ll come out each week and help her keep up with lessons until she’s able to go back to the classroom.

People working in schools are bureaucrats. They are asking for documentation because they need copies of something to file in the appropriate files so that they don’t get in trouble if their files are audited. Bureaucrats often forget to be considerate of people dealing with crises because they focus too much on paperwork…. So, just get the doctor to write up something indicating that she’ll be unable to attend classes for at least a couple of months, until further notice, and either take steps to homeschool her or get the school to provide homebound instruction for her.

Good luck.

Pain after Total Knee Replacement Surgery?

Monday, October 12th, 2009

I had total knee replacement surgery 4 weeks ago. I am 49 years old. According to my physical therapist, I am doing very well and am ahead of schedule in my recovery and range of motion. However, I am still experiencing quite a bit of pain that requires a narcotic pain reliever. Is this normal? How long does the pain usually last?
Additional comments based on your answers: I am doing exercises in therapy and at home to strengthen my entire leg. I have tried over-the-counter pain relievers, and nothing helps. I will ask the doctor next week if this pain is normal. I am in PT three days a week and do exercises at home twice a day. That’s what was recommended.

Unfortunately this is going to last until all of the scar tissue has been broken down and you can move the knee without any problems. The other aspect of this is that the muscles also have to improve in size and performance. As this happens there will be a decrease in pain. One of the things that you should be doing is working on the entire leg not just the knee. The hip and ankle musculature are also important in controlling what the knee is doing. The more walking that you are able to do the better. Riding a stationary bike is also helpful in controlling the pain. Use ice on the knee for fifteen to twenty minutes per hour to control both the pain and inflammation.

My son had surgery?

Sunday, October 4th, 2009

My one year old son had surgery on Friday and is having an amazing recovery. It was outpatient surgery – he had an extra pinky toe removed from his foot. After we brought him home, he acted like there wasn’t anything wrong. He was walking on it almost immediately, and hasn’t seemed to be in pain at all. We’ve been giving him Motrin and have been skipping the narcotic (oxycodone) he was prescribed because he is acting like nothing happened at all. So my question to all of you is, have you had similar experiences? I am so thrilled with his reaction to all this and am hoping you have happy stories to share, too.

I’m sorry for what happened to your son………

What’s helped you chronic pain sufferers in back pain?

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

i’m on heavy narcotics and i think it might be time to up them again since i have some "breakthrough" which is now "constant". Im on 50mcg of duragesic, 7.5 hydrocodone x3, 10mg cyclobenzaprine x2, and a compounded cream of ketamine/cyclobenzaprine/ketoprofen which is a lifesaver a few times a day (but i only get a little).

I’ve had addiction problems before and i’m hesitant to up the dose, but the pain is now so bad it’s impacting every aspect of my life. The pain stems from stenosis + scar tissue + degenerative disk disease. Im in the process of losing weight but there is only so much exercise i can do. Im desperately looking for measures that can help me that dont involve surgery of any kind – i’ve already been cut on twice and i dont want mroe time off work, more scars, more recovery time or more crushed hope.

I’m considering accupuncture, meditation, that ketamine treatment that is suppoesd to help reset the pain center of the brain someone told me about, epidural steroids, facet joint injections, nerve blocks – anything at all i can do. If anyone has any suggestions PLEASE let me know – this is ruining my life.

FYI, I did not ask for someone to tell me to go to rehab. Thank you for your concern but sometimes addicts need drugs for legitimate reasons. I can barely get through the day because of what feels like a knife shoved in my back and being ripped down to the middle of my shinbone. I asked for mature answers, not the equivilent of "stop popping pills you druggie". I specifically asked for thought out mature answers and if you can’t provide that, respectfully, do not answer the question.

Also, i’m not religious – mostly spiritual – so please, i want real concrete answers here. Faith based medicine isn’t covered by my insurance plan or my mind.

I’ve had two back surgeries, which were not 100% successful by any stretch. In addition to pain/muscle meds 3-4 times a day, I find that adding plain epsom salts to a hot bath helps. A product called Baththerapy is great too. The body absorbs magnesium from the salts in the water, which eases the muscle pain. In addition I have to take a liquid potassium supplement for different condition, but potassium levels affect muscle pain. The tight muscles can squeeze the nerves, which in turn aggrevate nerve pain.I put a good foam topper on the bed and bought Tony Little’s pillows, both which have made a huge difference. I can at least sleep 5-6 hours without waking up numb, tingling and in pain. It’s been a few years now, so I try to distract myself, and live as normally as possible (my entire lifestyle has been affected, am now considered disabled), get some form of exercise even though I know full well it will hurt (hey it already hurts, so wtf), and cry sometimes. I don’t play with meds, and the body will only metabolize so much anyway, so more does not always work, and of course can be dangerous. Norco, Tramadol and Robaxin have worked well for me, whereas I found percocet, morphine and duragesic patches are not as effective for me. Sometimes I add plain asprin if I feel inflammation. I wish you well.

What could I do about my uncle who lives with us that is burning himself with a cigarette to help other pain?

Monday, September 28th, 2009

He has trouble going to the bathroom. He has had this problem for six years now. He has seen many doctors and specialist that believe it is nerve damage. He’s an alcoholic, he’s been in recovery only slipping twice in the last eight years. They put him on all kinds of medicine. His primary doctor doesn’t want to prescribe pain meds anymore and wants his pain management doctor to handle all that…only they don’t write narcotics. He has a severe case of OCD, from the time he wakes up in the morning usually between 4 and 5 until the time he goes to bed at 10 he sits in the kitchen and reads. That is all he does. Last night he said he called his doctor and told her that the pain clinic won’t prescribe anything…she said she was going to get in touch with them…anyway, he then told me look i’m burning myself so i don’t feel that pain. When I said he has trouble going to the bathroom, i mean moving his bowels….although i know he has been going.

Everyone has a right to have their pain taken seriously and treated.
Have a meeting between all the docs and do something quick. Find other doctors if you have to. And if the pain really is that horrible go to the ER and tell them whats going on.

should i be trustful so soon?

Friday, September 25th, 2009

My fiance has had trouble with alcohol and narcotics for a very long time. When we met he was honest about the addiction and said he was no longer using shortly after our first daughter was born he started using again. We had a rough road and he was in and out of a detox center which only keep you a week. He had no insurance so long term centers were out of the question. But after about 2 years he managed to get insurance and now he is in a actual rehab treatment center. I grew up around drugs in my family i never would touch them i know what they do and how they hurt everyone around you. But i also know how it is hard to trust those who are in recovery. I am in a situation where little comments from a few of his family says about he better be trusted and people better be patient with him. He will be getting out in a few weeks. Yes i totally understand that he does not need any extra pressure, but i also feel that all of the things me and our kids have been put through its only normal to want him to earn my trust. I think that by trusting him he should show me he is trustworthy. Am i wrong for this?

Honestly you have to be smart, don’t trust him because you want to trust him. You have kids to think about. You want to support him, and help him on this road. If he is just coming out of this fecility then he hasn’t been in the real world or tempted yet therefor he doesn’t even know if he is trustworthy. Talk to him about it, tell him you want him to be open with you because this is going to be difficult. This way if anything you can trust he will tell you. This is going to be hard for the both of you and a journey. He seems to be taking the steps himself to go in the right direction which is great and I will personally be praying for this situation for you.

i am facing a 2 felonies and a misdemeanor in Az from 8 years ago. Can anyone recomend free help?

Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009

I have since then done PC1000 drug and alcohol counseling Domestic Violence classes and finished 2 years of Drug and alcohol in house recovery. I have been clean for 5 years now and the reason i fulfilled the above mentioned is cause i had openly admitted my drug use from a case in 2006 in mesa. THese incidents happened way before that and they still want me to plea guilty to felonies…..its a class three for possession of marijuana (some crumbs)according to their Report an Aggravated assault with a hammer (class 3) and posesion of dangerous narcotics for the rolling papers (class 6). i am not trying to use my christianity as a cop out but honestly believe that I can prove to be a person who has made a turn around. I cannot afford an attorney and am a inner-city missionary at a church in Los Angeles…i got to court Oct 3rd to see what plea they offer this time is cause i refused the last one. Any advise please help!!!!!!

get a public defender…or research the law for your crimes and be prepared before your court date. start cracking the books. you want to sound like you know what you are talking about and are aware of your rights, instead of going to court not knowing anything.
