What is your perception of various medications?

Sunday, January 17th, 2010

When you hear names of drugs on TV, in conversation, at your doctors office, or anywhere else what do you think of them?

Especially things like opioid pain killers (narcotics) and sedative/hypnotics.

Do you think some are bad and others good? What stands out? You do think any of the drugs should be removed from market? For example how would you view a person taking OxyContin compared to morphine.

Opioids (narcotics)

morphine, methadone, Vicodin, Percocet, OxyContin, Opana, Demerol, Darvon, tramadol

Benzodiazepines and other sedative/hypnotics

Valium, Xanax, Ativan, clonazepam, Librium, temazepam, Ambien, Lunesta, phenobarbital, Miltown

Doctors tend to overprescribe, sometimes without having enough information to go on. They reach for a quick-fix, a temporary solution, without necessarily being aware of the patient’s history, or caring.

Don’t forget that many pharmaceutical companies encourage doctors to prescribe by handing out free samples…just like pushers. And those incentives (kickbacks), invitations to "conferences" (ie paid vacations) etc. are just pretty packaging on an old system of bribes to get them to prescribe new, expensive, overkill Drug A instead of the older, cheaper, more thoroughly proven Drug B.

Methadone, back pain, pregnancy?

Wednesday, December 23rd, 2009

I asked a question bout my sister, and would up getting a lot of responses from people who work with heroin addicts. So, please read everything first. My sister got sciatica with her first child, so bad that she gets "stuck" when she lies flat on her back and every way she moves causes really horrible nerve spasms. She wound up on methadone (doc was eventually investigated by govt for prescription fraud!) and desperately wanted off, but found out the hard way that she can’t just stop. So she began to detox from 60 mgs, then got accidentally pregnant at 35 mgs. Decided rather than just abort to continue, with an OB-GYN’s approval, to continue detox (2mgs per week). So far, so good, down to 16 mgs. But she’s nervous if her baby will have any harm from this, most docs say things should be okay, but it’s a drug! Also, her sciatica is getting bad again, and she gets "stuck" now in positions that used to be okay. Has anyone detoxed and had baby? How can back be helped w/o narcotics?

Her doctor should NOT have prescribed her Methadone as a painkiller for her back. Methadone is extremely addictive, as you can tell from her withdrawls, and that is why even herion addicts are being prescribed a new, not as addictive, medication known as Suboxone (still addictive, but not nearly as much as Methadone).
Your sister will have to continue lowering her dosage of Methadone or it could cause serious health problems if she just completely stopped taking it.
Studies have shown that if a woman is pregnant and taking Methadone then the medication is quickly metabolized into the body and is out just as fast as it is in so the baby is most likely not getting much of the medicine if any.
She needs to just continue with the lowering her dosage and she and the baby should be fine.
Definitely have her find another doctor though because the doctor was wrong to prescribe Methadone for her back.
The only safe medication she can take for her back is Tylenol, unless another doctor prescribes her something else that is safe while pregnant.

I have a serious disease that causes me to need narcotic pain killers every day. Do you think I am an Addict?

Wednesday, November 18th, 2009

I have been on heavy narcotics for the past 10 years because of a painful bone disease and neurological degeneration. I have avascular necrosis from having to take large amounts of solu medrol a steroid after a serious head injury. This caused the blood flow to my knees, hip and ankle joints to stop and the bones to die, My knees no longer bend at all any more. Because of that I walk with my hips and my back has been deformed into a major sway back causing pressure on my discs and nerves causing neuropathy in my right knee, leg and foot. It feels like there is barbed wire wrapped around my knee and ankle and like my foot is being tortured by electric shocks. Now I have a pinched nerve in my left arm causing pain in my left shoulder, upper arm, elbow and wrist. I am now confined to a wheelchair or electric scooter. I am not a cry baby and have done everything, steroid injections, physical therapy, surgery, everything any doctor has ever asked me to do. The doctors all admit the pain must be severe but if someone has never had to depend on morphine, methadone or hydrocodone to get though the day they have no clue what what I am living with. I have a pain specialist and have never had to ask for more then I am allowed a month, gone to the ER for extra, seen more then one doctor at a time to get my medicine but I still get treated like a criminal. Because I have weak legs I fell and knocked myself out. My husband called the ambulance and at the hospital they treated me like an overdose patient even after they found no excess of medication in my blood and counted all my pills and found I was to the day with my medication. I am not am addict. I am dependent on the narcotics for any quality of life but without them I would be bedridden and most likely suicidal. I just want people to understand. Even doctors and nurses. I am not getting stoned or high. I am not pain free nor do I expect to be.I do not drive under the influence. I just want some quality of life. Invent something that removes pain other then a narcotic and I will take it gladly.

You poor thing. It would hurt so much.

I have also been in the same position as you when I used to be on many pain medications.
Sometimes my pain would require me to attend the ER and the Doctors and Nurses, people I work with, also treated me like a drug addict.
One Nurse even called me one straight up!

I am lucky now as my pain is usually well controlled with my neurostimulator so I hardly ever take pain meds anymore and that changes EVERY ONES attitude in the ER. Which it shouldn’t. Pain and being on pain meds does not make you an addict or a drug seeker.

I am going to add you as a contact. And give you this web address which explains exactly what your saying, but from my side, and how things are now. But the story is now about 5 years old so it need updating badly.

I am happy to chat with you anytime.

narcotic withdrawls?

Sunday, November 15th, 2009

i have been on vicodin for about the last 8 months within the last 3 months i have been taking enough to run me out of my months supply within a week. so i started bying other peoples scripts like percocets and methadone i realize i am going way over the top with this stuff and have decided to quit can anyone tell me what to expect and how long withdrawls from narcotics last is it possible to ride it out i have been off them for about 4 days now and i just seem to keep getting sicker. any advice would be appreciated i dont want to go to a doctor for it. do i have a choice?

First off, congratulations for WANTING to get off the drug!!

As far as answering, there are a lot of ways to get off of them. The best ways are slowly lowering your dose (takes a long time sometimes), or going cold turkey (which is faster, but harder). Either way, the last thing is making the decision to quit, so you’ll eventually have to deal with the withdrawal.

For the most part, when you deal with withdrawal, you’ll just have to tough it out, but there are some things that can help cleanse out the toxins and may help to minimize some of the effects of withdrawal…
Drinking water will help to detox, and taking some supplements that work as cleansers may help as well. Specifically, Apple Cider Vinegar, Green Tea (decaffeinated), Chlorophyll (fantastic cleanser), and even good amounts of fiber and water helps some people (although it’s not very comfortable for the lower level of detoxification you get).

All that being said, it’s likely that the symptoms should stop relatively shortly after your last pill (it’s never as long as it feels like it is). Your neurotransmitters don’t take too terribly long to scream for something they are addicted to after you stop.
Another important thing to note is that no matter how bad it gets, taking more of the drug will only make the withdrawal last longer and will be harder on you in the long run. Good luck, and congrats again!

why aren’t medical Dr’s held accountable for drug addiction..if they have been supplying them for years

Friday, November 6th, 2009

if you are put on narcotics for pain and three mos later they do m r i and can not find anything so every month you go back to get your perription and after awhile they up the dose… 2 years later a new dr a back specialist sees on reg x-ray and naked eye a fractured tailbone… sends you to pain dr i was on 380 10mg percocet…380 10mg methadone for over 2 years i was on narcotics…now addicted i am in pain daily and when i mentioned this to drs..they sent me to methadone clinic…
also after i told them i get sick if i didnt take the pills they said i was an addict and cut me off..they also noted the local emerency rooms of my addiction..so now they give me ultram non narcotic but it helps get rid of the sickness// oh by the way non narcotic Ultram 20 pills almost $40.00…20 percocet 10 mg $16.00 why would that be ..and they wonder why their are addicts/dealers

The doctors feed us these pills and we need them for pain and when they think it should be cured the pain, they take the pills away from us then the withdrawls come in,,,these dr.s should wean us off slowly, so as to get through the withdrawls,,,some ppl really need these pill, where as other don’t and the dr, still give them,,,can’t figure it out,,I need them for pain and they think I’am lieing,,,well x-rays prove problem and I have to beg her to give me pain relievers,,why should I have to suffer,,just cause they think the injury should be healed,,some take longer then otherslll…..They sent you to a methadone clinic to wean you off the opiates,,,this will help with the pain and lessen the withdrawls from not haveing your script….trust me I have been there and the sleepless nights and the pain of not having the pain killers is terrible,,is hard to quit these pills me have been trying for over a year now and still don’t have a grip on it yet…I wish you well,,Once the methadone is in your system,,,then they have to wean you off that,,either way it’s a long road..

How can I prove to my wife that I am ready to be honest with her?

Wednesday, November 4th, 2009

I have been married for 5 and half years now. Since the beginning of our relationship I have been lying on some level about the same recurring problem. I have a subance abuse problem, and have been in therapy and was doing great for quite some time. I recently had a relapse due to getting hooked on my pain killers for a back injury. I used this injury more often than needed to get as may pills as possible. My wife would find evedince of this and I would be caught red handed but flat our deny it. I have been doing very well for some time. I have continued with therapy. I have even taken it upon myself to have my doctor put in my records issue with subsance abuse and that I can’t be prescribed narcotic pain killers. I recently had some more issues with my back pain and was prescribed a small dose of methadone for the pain. I snorted it. My wife basicly caught me and I denied it. I am ready to be honest now. Why should she ever believe me. My family means everything to me.

No they don’t (mean everything to you). You see, you are looking for the easy way out again. How can I make "her" see? That’s not the question that should be asked. How can I change and stick with it? That’s the question needed. If you are sincere then she will see it with time. Plus there isn’t a time limit for her to have to follow. If it takes one year or five years, too bad for you. Just focus on yourself and not on trying to get back in her good graces. If you lose her then just keep on with your own focus. She shouldn’t even be part of the equation for you to have change.

A Question about Probation Officers Searching My House?

Sunday, November 1st, 2009

I am on supervised probation for the next five years. I was wondering about what your probation officer has the right to search when they come out to your house. My concern is whether I will get into trouble over the prescription drugs that my boyfriend and his mother, who l live with, has. My boyfriend has prescription methedone, but he only gets a takehome on Saturdays and holidays. However, his mother has a prescription of Loracets, Ambien, Cymbalta, and blood pressure medicine. They keep the medicine put away. However, if my probation officer sees their prescription medication, can I get into trouble over it since the Loracets, Methadone, and Ambien are narcotics? Or is it okay since it is prescibed to those in my household?

Well, you didn’t say what you were on probation for. I’m assuming since your question is focused on drugs, you are also on probation for drugs. Your boyfriend is a recovering addict hence the methadone. I can only assume then that you are on probation for the very same thing as your boyfriend has problems with, i.e., smack. If I am wrong, and you are on probation for, say, felony theft, then the drug condition cannot be added to your probation terms.

So yes, the terms and conditions of your probation likely prohibit you from associating with other addicts or be in a place in which you could have access to prescription drugs which can be abused. You will have to closely examine the terms of your probation, which are available as a printout from whatever date you were sentenced. You should inform your probation officer in advance, before the search, of the circumstances in which you live. Be well aware of your probation conditions before speaking with your PO.

This kind of thing happens frequently. If I have an alcohol prohibition from multiple DUIs, my wife is not allowed to have alcohol in the house. If I am on parole for a violent felony and I have a gun restriction, no weapons can be in the home I’m in. Those are typically the rules even though other persons have a legal right to possess those things.

What Should Happen to this Mother?

Friday, October 30th, 2009

I read a story about a mother who "accidently" killed her daughter. This is just pain stupidity.
The 6 year old girl said she had a headache and when Children’s Motrin did not work, the mother stuck a Fentanyl patch on the child and told her to go to bed. The Fentanyl patch contains oxycodone, morphine, methadone and other narcotic pain relievers. The child died just an hour later in her bed of respiratory distress.
The patch was pescribed to the mother for her severe chronic pain after other pain relievers did not work for her, so she had to of know this was top serious stuff. I wanted to cry when I read this

That is terrible and obviously she should be charged with manslaughter. Ignorance is no excuse, she should have contacted a doctor. It’s common sense that you do not give prescription drugs to anyone they are not prescribed for, nevermind a child!

marijuauna helps pain better than morphine?

Wednesday, October 28th, 2009

I am so tired of suffering. I am on the max narcotics for pain and pot works better. Why won’t they think of something better? The morphine doesn’t cut it anymore and neither does the methadone. I have over 12 chronic painful conditions. Help me please. Any ideas welcome.

As a recovering pothead I can tell you that yes, pot does help, but in the long run, it goes down the same road as your other failed pain medications. Eventually the body builds a resistance to almost any drug you use long term. It’s not that they aren’t making anything better, it’s that anything you use long term is not going to be as effective as it was when you first started using it. I am so sorry for your condition man – my heart goes out to you. If it is at all possible, I think maybe you should look into maybe hypnosis or deep meditation. Just try it – it’s better for you and your body than pumping yourself full of more drugs, don’t you think?

I’ll send you some healing energy!! Feel better!!

Euthanasia in Australia ? Why don’t people use available Narcotic Analgesics ? Instead of Mexican Nembutal ?

Wednesday, October 28th, 2009

Instead of going through the risky, painful and long drawn out drama of trying to illegally bring Nembutal back to Australia,to then euthanaise themselves, why don’t these poor suffering people just use/take a whole script all in one go,of one of the very easily and legally obtainable Narcotic Analgesics? Like Oxycodone, Methadone , Morphine etc, to name a few. There’s literally dozens of these types of drugs. And they are nearly all available in lquid or tablet form.Plus the cost of these drugs is miniscule compared to travelling to Mexico and back !….the full price of a monthly script of Oxycodone, for example, is around a few hundred or so dollars, and only a mere $5.00 if the person gets it on the Pensioners Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme. And a months supply of say 80 mgm tablets,of 3 a day, would be many times more than enough to Euthanaise yourself….and a stable full of horses!
Ozzygob gives a humungously huge load of eeeeeeerz cheeeeeeeerz to EUTHANASIA BEING LEGALISED ! !
Good one Reapy !
It took Ozzygob a second read to get ya humorous drift !
G’day Katty,…………..these people aren’t ’stupid’. They are, or will be in debilitatingly, unremitting, chronic pain, and desperation. Some of these people may even suffer an excruciatingly slow death by suffocation.
Ozzygob knows you didn’t mean to cause offence !……………………..
Leave that to Ozzygob when Ozzygob has to deal with the unwanted and interfereing godgobbers !

Anyone who commits suicide should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
