Before the 13th century the Arabs had developed sophisticated fretted instruments based on these relationships. By 1640 Mersenne and Galileo had independently discovered how the diameter and tension are related to a plucked string’s pitch. Although it was obvious to these pioneers that sound generation was concerned with vibration, they had no way of measuring vibration and no means whatsoever of discovering what sound actually was. This is what people want to know when learning violin lessons. All the early discoveries had to be descried in terms of pitch what was heard and many of the words we use in music today continue this way of describing things.
