Are narcotics addictive if you actually have pain?

Friday, July 31st, 2009

Of course they can be. Even though you take them for pain, if you increase your dose, you risk getting addicted but as long as you only take them they way your Dr. told you too, you should be alright. All narcotics are addictive but only if abused.

I’m looking for alternative methods to manage narcotic withdrawal?

Friday, July 31st, 2009

I went cold turkey and was very sick for weeks. Even though I went through the worst of it, I still felt a little sick. So ten days ago I went on Suboxone. I’m having trouble adjusting to it. I’m looking for an alternative self-managed withdrawal method. I haven’t had any narcotics for at least a month before starting the suboxone. I don’t have cravings-I’ve tackled the mental aspect of the addiction – I just want to get off the meds as comfortably as possible.
All comments, suggestions, ect. greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
Rose

First off, congratulations for WANTING to quit!!

For the most part, when you deal with withdrawal, you’ll just have to tough it out, so thankfully, it sounds like you’ve got the willpower to do it. However, there are some things that can help cleanse out the toxins and may help to minimize some of the effects (and the time) of withdrawal…
Drinking water will help to detox, and taking some supplements that work as cleansers may help as well. Specifically, Apple Cider Vinegar, Green Tea (decaffeinated), Chlorophyll (fantastic cleanser), and even good amounts of fiber and water helps some people (although it’s not very comfortable for the lower level of detoxification you get).

All that being said, it’s likely that the symptoms should stop relatively shortly after your last pill… your neurotransmitters don’t take too terribly long to scream for something they are addicted to after you stop. Good luck, and congrats again!

How do you celebrate 20 years in Narcotics Anonymous?

Friday, July 31st, 2009

My boyfriend will soon be celebrating 20 years clean and sober. He only goes to meetings once or twice a year these days, and seems reluctant to "make a fuss" and pick up a chip, especially in a new place with a new group. (We just moved to a new area.)

I am VERY proud of him, and we both know this is a big deal. How can I encourage him? I need ideas about what others who have long-term sobriety have done regarding celebrations, chips, etc. (We’ve been dating for less than a year, so I’m clueless.)

I also need to know how to talk to him about this, and whether / how I could participate. I don’t want to push… he needs to do this on his own. But I don’t want him to "aw, shucks" over it, either. He’s a very sweet, humble fellow, and I want him to know that others can benefit from hearing about his experience.

I also want to know what I can give him to show him how proud I am of him.

Thanks in advance for you answers, and best wishes to others in recovery!

20 yrs. – That is so awesome!
This is something that can be looked at from alot of different viewpoints. If he doesn’t want to share this with alot of people you have to respect that. After all- he deserves his privacy based on his accomplishment.
I would say something simple for your man…like a wonderful dinner and possibly you could use what I am going to do…
my husband is 1 month away from 1 yr. of sobriety and I’m making a video tape with clips of pictures- our son playing, him working on a project, our little rented house, our dog, etc. and at the end of 5 min. I will be on the camera looking directly into it and telling him how much I value being a part of his life and what an inspiration he is to me.
I’m going to put a little bow on the tape and a sticky note that says "watch me"… I’m going to let him do this in private so he can reflect on the meaning of my words. He is a man with those same traits and I value him like he will never know.
I wish you both well and I pray both your lives will be enhanced by this achievement of strength and honesty!

Does methadone show up in a 5 panel drug test?

Friday, July 31st, 2009

Reason being my husband had back surgery and got on narcotics cause of the pain now he is wanting to get off them so they gave him methadone. He is looking to get a job where they drug test you. What it show up? It is doctor prescribed but most employers wont hire if you have any kind of drug in your system.

Yes Methadone will show up on a 5 panel drug test- It will show up on any drug test. Sorry- However, you are incorrect thinking that employers will not hire a person if they have any kind of drug in their system. If you or in this case your husband shows positive for drugs and they are prescribed by a doctor and documentation can be presented- then the drug test for those finding can not be used to determine employment eligibility.
In this specific case, because the drug that is going to come up is Methadone, it will raise suspicion about why he is on Methadone- basically because Methadone is more times than not prescribed for recovering drug addicts.
My advice for your husband is to tell the company that he is on Methadone because he was hurt and the doctor prescribed it for him- He should bring in any and all paperwork with him to the interview and be completely truthful about it. The company will also have to send him out for a drug test instead of doing a 5 panel drug test. The 5 panel tests will test by the major categories. It will not give a reading of what type of drug he is actually testing positive to. He is totally within his legal rights to ask to be tested by a doctor and not a 5 panel.

Why does it seem that Narcotics Anonymous (NA) and Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) groups don’t get along?

Friday, July 31st, 2009

Because I was in both programs, and the NA group never had anything good to say about AA. In fact, it was frowned upon if your sponsor was from AA!

Yeah, you’re right. I don’t know why either. I was in AA for a long time and many people there definitely considered themselves superior to other types of addicts. Weird. But remember, AA (and the other programs too) are NOT really recovery programs; they are religious cults. It’s easier to understand them if you look at it from that perspective.

Lortab side effects?

Friday, July 31st, 2009

Went to the ER last night, got stitches, & Rx for Lortab to ease the pain. Took one last nite & it helped the pain, but then couldn’t go to sleep.
I thought Lortab is a narcotic & a side effect is drowsiness — why was I wide awake til 1 a.m.?

Lortab is acetaminophen and hydrocodone and comes in many different strengths. It may be that you were prescribed a lower strength, so it would have less sedating side effects than a higher strength preparation. Also medications effect everyone differently or if you had eaten with it, it would have less effect.

Can anyone please give me a site where I can find news clippings about the abuse of narcotic drugs?

Friday, July 31st, 2009

Please help me…I need it badly…or if you can’t recommend a site, can you please give me news articles instead?

Just go to www.google.com and click on news. there’s a search tab there that will let you search the internet for any news columns that deal with what you want.

Heres the link I came up with for drug abuse:

Good luck!

Is there a non-narcotic pain reliever for the permanent form of bursitis?

Friday, July 31st, 2009

I have tried several, but Vioxx and Celebrex were the only ones that worked. Now Vioxx is off the market, and Celebrex is under suspicion for the same heart problems. Is there are drug that actually works for the permanent form of bursitis and is non-narcotic? Thank you.

Both of your afore-mentioned drugs are not safe, as you have already recognized. It may surprise you to know that there is a very old drug OTC, that stills does the job and is not habit forming.
"ASA" Aspirin is still the best as an Analgesic for what ails you! For those that suffer stomach problems, you should use "Ecotrin" aspirin, which has a coating that allows it to desolve in your small bowel. Besides the pain relief it provides, it will also thin your blood slightly, which we all tend to look at as we grow older. Sometimes areas of your body suffer from the lack of nutrients, which can trigger pain. So this is also something to think about, but your best bet is to always consult your Physician first
OTC is usually the best route (cost-wise), but you need to have a very good understanding of your physical needs before you venture out on your own. You also need to trully understand all the effects of any drug that you take, before you take it. Again, consult your Physician FIRST.

What is the punishment for a minor in possession of narcotics and marijuana?

Friday, July 31st, 2009

14 year old caught with narcotics and marijuana by the police. What kind of felonies or sentencing would they normally receive? How often would drug testing occur or how long would probation consist of?

And, no, I’m not asking for myself. It’s for a paper :D
In Michigan

In Michigan, possession of any marijuana can result in a maximum 90 day jail sentence and a $100. Conditional discharge, meaning probation, is available for simple possession. Worse punishment and fines exist for public use, possession over an ounce, manufacture or sale of any kind.

If hypothetically you get caught by police with marijuana at age 14, the judge would give you probation. Probation time is at the discretion of the judge, and any requirements to complete probation would be decided by the judge, or your probation officer.

A link has been provided with in-dept laws regarding marijuana in your state and what the charges are. The second link is a map of the US and every state law dealing with marijuana (it differs by state).

Good luck on your paper!
